There are stones out here that have been standing longer than Texas has been Texas. Old basalt. Dark-veined granite. The kind of rock that's watched empires rise on the plains and fall back into them, and never once moved an inch. Wind doesn't shape it. Fire doesn't soften it. Water just goes around.

Shadowsteel was born from one of those.

This dragon doesn't care which way the wind is blowing. Fire? It runs off the scales like rain off a tin roof. Earth tremors? Stood through worse. The rules everyone else plays by, the cycles of element and advantage that decide who beats who, just bend a little when they meet him. Iron doesn't argue. Iron stays.

The dark scales drink in the light by day, holding it deep until full dark. Then the glow comes on slow and cold, the color of moonlight on a railroad spike. Shadowsteel is the last word in any conversation.
