Frequently Asked Questions
About Our Candles
Where are Timber Creek Ranch candles made? Every Timber Creek Ranch candle is hand-poured in small batches in Weatherford, Texas, in the heart of Parker County. We are a family owned and operated small business, and every candle is made right here in the Lone Star State.
What kind of wax do you use? We use a premium container wax chosen for its clean, even burn and exceptionally strong scent throw. Every candle is poured at a controlled temperature and cured for a full 14 days before shipping, which gives the wax time to fully bond with the fragrance oil for the best possible scent.
Why do your candles have wooden wicks instead of cotton wicks? Wooden wicks burn cleaner, slower, and wider than cotton wicks, which means less tunneling, less smoke, and a longer-lasting candle. They also make that soft, fireplace-like crackle that turns a candle into an experience. Every Timber Creek Ranch candle burns on a real wooden wick, sized specifically to the fragrance in the jar.
How long do your candles burn? Each 8 oz Timber Creek Ranch candle burns approximately 40 to 50 hours when cared for properly. To get the longest burn, trim the wick to ¼ inch before each lighting and let the wax melt all the way to the edge of the jar on the first burn.
Are your candles strongly scented? Yes, dramatically so. Most Timber Creek Ranch candles are loaded at 12% or higher fragrance concentration, near the maximum our premium wax can hold. For comparison, common candles are typically loaded at 6% to 8%. That means a Timber Creek Ranch candle is two to three times stronger than a common candle the same size. Combined with our 14-day cure time, this gives every candle a powerful, true-to-name scent throw that actually fills a room.
Why are your candles so much stronger than other candles I've burned? Two reasons. First, most candle makers load their fragrance at 6% to 8% to save money on oil, which is the most expensive ingredient. We load ours at 12% or higher, near the maximum capacity our premium wax can hold. Second, we cure every candle for a full 14 days before it ships, which gives the fragrance oil time to fully bond with the wax. The result is a candle that throws scent across a whole room from a single jar, not just a few feet around it.
How to Burn
How do I get the longest, best-smelling burn out of my candle? Four rules. First, trim your wooden wick to ¼ inch before every burn. Second, let the wax melt all the way to the edge of the jar on the first burn, which usually takes two to three hours. Third, never burn for more than four hours at a time. Fourth, keep the flame under one inch high. A flame taller than an inch will actually burn the fragrance instead of casting it into the room, and over time can overheat the glass and cause thermal cracking. A trimmed wick and a short flame give you the best scent throw and the longest, safest burn.
How do I light a wooden wick? Hold the flame to the base of the wick where it meets the wax, not the top. Wooden wicks take a little longer to light than cotton, so give it about 10 to 15 seconds. If it goes out, trim off any charred wood and try again.
Why does my flame get too tall, and what should I do about it? A flame taller than one inch usually means the wick needs trimming. Long wicks burn hot and tall, which wastes fragrance by burning it off rather than casting it into the room, and can overheat the glass and cause thermal cracking. Extinguish the candle, let it cool, trim the wooden wick down to ¼ inch, and relight. Your candle will smell stronger and burn safer.
Can I burn my candle near a window or AC vent? No. Keep your candle away from cold drafts, AC vents, ceiling fans, and open windows. Cold air on a hot candle causes uneven burning, tunneling, smoking, and in some cases thermal cracking of the glass. A still, stable spot indoors is always best.
When should I stop burning my candle? Always discard your candle when ¾ inch of wax remains in the jar. Burning past that point causes the wick base to migrate as the wax depletes, which can contact the glass directly and cause it to overheat or crack. This is a serious fire and injury hazard. The good news is the empty jar cleans up easily and can be reused for storage, plants, or anything except another flame.
Is it safe to burn candles around pets? Our candles are made with quality fragrance oils, but pets, especially birds and some cats, can be sensitive to fragranced products. We recommend burning in a well-ventilated area and never leaving any candle unattended around pets. If you notice your pet acting differently when a candle is burning, extinguish it and ventilate the room.
Scents and Inspiration
Why are your scent names Texas-themed? Because everything we make is inspired by Texas. Every one of our scents is named for a place, a person, a memory, or a moment from the Lone Star State. Parker County Clean is the air after a North Texas rainstorm. Bluebonnets on the Brazos is the wildflowers along the river. Nacogdoches Nut Bread is grandma's Thanksgiving kitchen in deep East Texas. There's a story behind every candle.
How many scents do you currently offer? We currently produce 13 core Texas-themed scents, available year-round. We also release seasonal candles throughout the year, including limited-edition scents for spring, summer, fall, winter, and the holidays. Check back often to see what's new.
Do you make custom or seasonal scents? Yes to seasonal. We release new limited-edition seasonal candles throughout the year, so there's always something fresh in the shop alongside our 13 core scents. We do not currently offer fully custom candles for individuals, but wholesale and bulk custom orders can be discussed by email.
